Common Questions and Answers About Chiropractic

Why don’t medical doctors approve of chiropractic?

Many do. The majority of medical doctors however are simply uniformed about the well-researched benefits of chiropractic care. In fact, spinal adjustments (or manipulations) are the most-researched health care procedure and the best validated one in ALL of medical literature.

I don’t want to be “cracked” are there any alternatives?

Absolutely! There are many different chiropractic techniques. We use Activator technique in our office, which is low force instrument adjusting. There is no cracking or popping and is very comfortable and effective for patients of all ages. You can find more information at www.activatormethods.com

Is it bad to “crack” you back or neck a lot?

This question is often asked of doctors of chiropractic because people associate cracking or popping of one’s neck with a chiropractic adjustment. The two are not the same thing. If a person has a desire to pop his neck or back it’s usually because part of his spine is fixated or jammed causing another part to move too much and pop a lot, sometimes by itself. It’s the jammed or fixated part that must be properly adjusted by a doctor of chiropractic so that the rest of the spinal column will stop being hypermobile or noisy. When you crack your neck you’re relieving tension for a little while, but not giving yourself an adjustment. After a while the urge to crack reappears because the cause of the spinal tension, the fixation or jammed vertebrae hasn’t been corrected. If a person makes a habit of cracking his/ her own spine, they better go to a doctor of chiropractic to have his spine checked for probable fixations. Even a doctor of chiropractic cannot adjust him/ herself.

Is it okay to let a friend “adjust” my neck or back or walk on my back?

Only if your friend is a doctor of chiropractic. Adjustments performed by a licensed doctor of chiropractic are completely safe. However, manipulations performed by untrained individuals can be very dangerous.

Do doctors of chiropractic have medical degrees?

No. Doctors of Chiropractic have chiropractic degrees from chiropractic colleges. The letters D.C. after a chiropractor’s name stand for Doctor of Chiropractic. A doctor of chiropractic has virtually the same educational requirements as a medical doctor. The only differences are in the specifics of the contents of the curriculum.

Can you tell if you have a subluxation (or misalignment) on your own?

Sometimes but usually not. Only 10% of spinal nerves are able to sense pain. This means that up to 90% of subluxations never cause spinal pain. It’s estimated that by the time you develop symptoms of a subluxation, you have lost up to 40% of nervous system function in the affected area. The negative effects of this loss of nerve function accumulate imperceptibly, sometimes for years before you have the first sign that something may be wrong.

It is fairly certain, however, that if you are having any kind of symptom, you are subluxated. Another sure sign of subluxation is fatigue. An out-of-balance spinal column causes fatigue or loss of energy.

This is why regular spinal check-up by a doctor of chiropractic is critical for long-term health and vitality even when you are symptom free. Regular chiropractic visits are similar to regular dental visits. Just as you wouldn’t wait for a cavity to visit the dentist, you shouldn’t wait for a symptom to visit your chiropractor.

How long does an Adjustment Take?

Usually just a few minutes once the doctor of chiropractic is familiar with your spine. After the initial visit (when the doctor takes your case history and evaluates your condition), and the “Report of Findings” (usually the second visit), your regular office visit will take between 3-10 minutes.

Is an Adjustment Dangerous?

Absolutely not- as long as the adjustment is performed by a doctor of chiropractic. Chiropractic is completely safe and effective. Statically, a chiropractic adjustment is one of the safest health care procedures in the world.

Can chiropractic prevent back surgery?

In the vast majority of cases the answer is – YES!

Can a person who has had back surgery benefit from chiropractic care?

Yes. Many people who have had spinal surgery have a reoccurrence of their problems months or years later. Past surgeries do not prevent anyone from benefiting from chiropractic care.

What is the youngest/ oldest age for chiropractic care?

There is no age limit. Newborns may need to be adjusted, especially if they had a difficult or traumatic birth. Even if the birth wasn’t traumatic, babies should be checked for spinal abnormalities and subluxations.

People of advanced years should be under chiropractic care to avoid health problems and increase longevity.

Do I have to keep going back?

You decide how long you would like to benefit from chiropractic care. People are so used the medical model of health care which is based on the treatment of symptoms. Symptoms are mere signs that disease processes are going on in your body. Symptom treatment, though usually quick, is a short-term cover-up and is neglecting the underlying cause of the problem.

Chiropractors are concerned with correcting the cause of your health problem- not just treating the symptoms.  We make recommendations to correct the problem, which is in the best long-term interests of our patients. However, you are the one that ultimately decides to receive care or not. We will always respect your choice.
